Treatments

When you first attend the practice we will carry out a full oral examination. This includes

  •  Checking your jaw joint for any problems.
  • Checking your head and neck to ensure no obvious problems are missed.
  • Full oral cancer screen in your mouth.
  • Checking  all your hard and soft tissues for disease or problems (i.e tooth decay, gum disease etc).
  • Checking any dentures, crowns, bridgework, implants etc that you may have.
  • Checking  how well you are brushing and discuss oral hygiene with you.
  • Taking any x-rays deemed necessary to help diagnose any problems or just as part of your routine check up.

SCALE AND POLISH

This is a general clean of all your hard tissues of the mouth to remove plaque, calculus and staining. Generally this should be done twice a year.

PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

This is a more extensive type of scale and polish that is normally carried out under local anaesthetic.  It is how we treat periodontal (gum) disease.  When you have periodontal disease plaque and bacteria collect at the necks of the teeth and cause destruction of the periodontal ligament that attaches your tooth to the underlying bone.  This creates a small pocket between the gum and the tooth.

This pocket gets further infested with plaque and bacteria and the damage to the ligament continues. If left untreated the bone holding the tooth in place can dissolve away causing the tooth to appear loose or wobbly in your mouth.

In the x-ray opposite we can see that the patient has moderate gum disease. You can see where the normal  bone level should be and where it is now.  This can give rise to bleeding, pain sensitivity, and gum abscesses.

FILLINGS

This is the most common way to restore a tooth.

Previously the metal ‘amalgam’ filling was used for most restorations, however these have largely been replaced by white ‘composite’ fillings.

Composite fillings give the tooth a nicer appearance but also help to stabilise the tooth tissue and prevent fractures and cracks.

COSMETIC BONDING

This is a way of changing the appearance of a tooth by adding white composite filling material to it.

For example if you feel like there are large spaces in between your teeth you can close these gaps by adding composite to teeth.

This masks the appearance of these large spaces and gives a more pleasing appearance.

CROWNS

These are tooth shaped restorations that cover broken, worn or stained teeth. They are constructed in a dental laboratory and are mostly made in porcelain.
Crowns help to stabilise teeth that are severely weakend by large fillings.
Crowns can also be used to rebuild teeth that are severely worn.

Finally crowns can be used as part of a smile makeover to disguise crowding and stained teeth.

BRIDGES

This is a way of replacing missing teeth by crowning the teeth nearest to where the tooth has been lost.  For example if you were missing one tooth, the teeth either side of the gap would be crowned. A porcelain tooth would then be attached to both of these crowns to form a unit of  three teeth. This is a bridge.  This whole unit is then cemented in your mouth. A well made bridge could reasonably last you for up to fifteen years

VENEERS

Veneers are porcelain lenses that lie over the front part of the tooth only.  They can be used to cover stains within a tooth or if a tooth has become dark following a root canal treatment.  Veneers can also be used to change the shape of a tooth or to disguise crowding much like a crown.   Veneers can be placed directly over the tooth surface or may require a very small amount of tooth removal.

DENTURES

Dentures are ‘false teeth’ that can be removed every day by the patient.  They are used to replace one or more missing teeth in the mouth.  They also help to support the remaining teeth especially when eating and chewing.  They can be made out of a variety of materials.

Acrylic

This is a hard plastic material.  It is the quickest and easiest form of denture to make. It is relatively inexpensive but can be hard to tolerate due to its bulk especially if you are trying a denture for the first time.

Cobalt Chrome

This is a metal based denture. It is light, and uses clasps and connecters to help retain the denture in the mouth. This type of denture is generally very well tolerated.

Valplast

This is the newest type of denture on the market.  They are made from an unbreakable nylon resin and each denture comes with a lifetime guarantee against breakage and fracture. They are light, aesthetic, comfortable and metal free.

ENDODONTICS

This is better known as ‘root canal treatment’. This is normally carried out when the nerve inside a tooth dies. This can happen from decay, trauma or a heavy restoration on a tooth. The nerve is removed from the tooth, the canals are shaped, and then a rubber based material is placed in the tooth to replace the nerve tissue.

At Mayberry Dental Care we use the latest technology to clean and shape your tooth. The  ‘wave one’ rotary instruments which allows us to complete your root treatment using only one size of file which cuts down the time you are in the dental chair!  We also use a variety of techniques to make sure your root canal treatment is pain free.

BLEACHING

Laser ‘in house’ bleaching

This is tooth whitening that is done in the surgery and takes approximately one hour. Your soft tissues are isolated with a special barrier material and dental bleach is applied to your teeth. A blue light is then shone onto your mouth to accelerate the whitening process.

At home dental whitening

For this procedure we take impressions of your top and bottom teeth and make you a custom fitted trays. We then give you the latest colgate max  white professional bleach and show you how to place the bleach in the trays. You wear the trays overnight  for up to two weeks.

Colgate max white professional greatly reduces sensitivity that is sometimes associated with dental whitening.  (Colgate max professional Complies with the Council of European Union Directive)

NIGHT GUARDS

These are for patients that are exhibiting signs and symptoms of bruxing (tooth grinding).  These include:

  • excessive tooth wear
  • sore teeth or jaws in the morning
  • frequent headaches
  • fractured fillings or teeth
  • pain around the teeth when eating
  • Sensitive teeth

If you are diagnosed as a bruxist (tooth grinder or clencher) we may opt to make you a night guard to wear while you sleep. They are normally very small and clip onto your four front top or bottom teeth. They are made of a hard plastic and help to relieve symptoms brought on by grinding

IMPLANTS

Dental Implants are titanium screws that are placed into the jaw bone to mimic the root of a tooth. The remaining soft tissue  is then sutured around the implant head which lies visible above the gum line.

A porcelain crown is then placed over the implant head. If done correctly and with expert care it is impossible to tell that you are missing a tooth.

ORTHODONTICS

Simple movements of your teeth with a removeable applicance can be performed here at Mayberry Dental Care. If we think your treatment requires a specialist orthodontist we may refer you to Dr. Finn Geoghegan, who runs a clinic in Glenageary.

SPORTS GUM SHIELD

It is vitally important that a sports gum shield is worn during any contact sport. These are the best types of sports guards on the market. They are an exact replica of the mouth. They are extended to the most posterior teeth and are designed to transmit impact forces equally to all teeth. Thus significantly decreasing the chance of a dental trauma. GAA Congress recently passed a motion making it mandatory for juvenile players up to minor grade to wear mouth guards from the start of 2013. The rule will come into effect for senior players from the start of 2014.
